Bitumen Crumbed Rubber Asphalt (BCRA)

Highly flexible, crack-resistant asphalt made from repurposed Australian tyres

Asphaltech’s Bitumen Crumbed Rubber Asphalt (BCRA) incorporates crumbed rubber from used Australian tyres, providing excellent flexibility and durability to pavements. Its elastomeric (rubbery) composition effectively reduces noise while simultaneously cushioning the shear strain in the asphalt, minimising the rate of sub-grade cracking reflecting into the asphalt surface. As a result of its hard-wearing nature, BCRA is an extremely reliable asphalt and the Victorian Planning Authority’s (VPA) preferred treatment option for all base courses in pavements on expansive subgrades.

Asphaltech has specifically designed BCRA to cater to local councils that are looking to build more resilient and sustainable roads. The locally-sourced, quality crumbed rubber in BCRA is produced from shredding and granulating used and discarded Australian tyres, which are non-biodegradable and would otherwise end up in problematic tyre stockpiles.

Compared to SAMI Seal and spray seal binders, BCRA:
Saves Money

BCRA offers clients substantial cost savings of approximately $5/m2, based on historical financial and project data.

Saves Time

BCRA can be paved faster than SAMI Seal, saving at least one day on a construction program and reducing risks of project delays that result from spray sealing, wet weather and loose stone cleanup.

Reduces Waste

Australia generates around 56 million end-of life passenger car tyres each year, and ever-growing tyre stockpiles are taking landfill sites beyond capacity. These stockpiles are also extreme fire hazards, further posing a further risk to public health and safety from toxic emissions that end up in the air and in our waterways.

Asphalt incorporating BCRA:
  • Superior fatigue performance

  • Reduced maintenance cycles

  • Improved rut and crack resistance

  • Reduced noise
