Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway in Neerabup, Western Australia, has welcomed Perth’s supercars back following a full resurfacing executed by Asphaltech. The refreshed 2.42km racetrack is now considered the fastest and safest in Australia.
Formerly known as Wanneroo Raceway and located approximately 50 kilometres north of Perth, Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway had long been considered one of the most abrasive and difficult for both drivers and engineers. The circuit has been in operation since 1969, and was last resurfaced in 2004.
“The previous surface has served WA motorsport very well, lasting longer than many others,” WASCC President Russell Sewell told Speedcafe on announcing the news of the resurface in December 2018. “But I’m confident the new surface will also last very well whilst reducing tyre wear and thus making our venue more economical for all users.”
On winning the contract with the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC), Asphaltech was tasked with designing and manufacturing a specially-formulated Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) product to meet the raceway’s strict safety specifications.
The resulting 2000 tonnes of asphalt laid by Asphaltech comprised of 1700 tonnes of 7mm SMA and Race Mix with A20E PMB Binder. 300 tonnes of 14mm DG was also laid as base course on Turn 3 Chicane.
This superior SMA surface now demonstrates an exceptionally high grip between it and the Super V8 racing car tyres, excellent skid resistance (even in wet conditions), incredible durability and increased tyre longevity.
