Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway in Neerabup, Western Australia, has welcomed Perth’s supercars back following a full resurfacing executed by Asphaltech. The refreshed 2.42km racetrack is now considered the fastest and safest in Australia.

Formerly known as Wanneroo Raceway and located approximately 50 kilometres north of Perth,  Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway had long been considered one of the most abrasive and difficult for both drivers and engineers. The circuit has been in operation since 1969, and was last resurfaced in 2004.

“The previous surface has served WA motorsport very well, lasting longer than many others,” WASCC President Russell Sewell told Speedcafe on announcing the news of the resurface in December 2018. “But I’m confident the new surface will also last very well whilst reducing tyre wear and thus making our venue more economical for all users.”

On winning the contract with the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC), Asphaltech was tasked with designing and manufacturing a specially-formulated Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) product to meet the raceway’s strict safety specifications.

The resulting 2000 tonnes of asphalt laid by Asphaltech comprised of 1700 tonnes of 7mm SMA and Race Mix with A20E PMB Binder. 300 tonnes of 14mm DG was also laid as base course on Turn 3 Chicane.

This superior SMA surface now demonstrates an exceptionally high grip between it and the Super V8 racing car tyres, excellent skid resistance (even in wet conditions), incredible durability and increased tyre longevity.

Like all high profile projects, the raceway resurfacing came with various obstacles to overcome.

Due to race events and bookings the WASCC already had in place at the time, Asphaltech was unable to start works onsite until just before Christmas 2018 and any disturbance to the track and surrounding areas whilst there was racing on the track was a paramount safety concern.

In addition to this timing challenge, WASCC also required the track to be resurfaced as quickly as possible to allow maximum curing time ahead of the track being reopened for race season on the 1st March 2019. The construction duration was therefore scheduled for the tight timeframe of 24th Dec 2018 to 14th Jan 2019, which included the challenging Christmas and New Year break, when manpower and construction materials were limited.

The Chicane required construction prior to resurfacing of the track to ensure that there was no construction traffic on the newly resurfaced track to avoid any damage to the new asphalt mat, and a special race type “Melbourne” Kerb was required to be constructed.

Thanks to Asphaltech’s recently opened, state-of-the-art asphalt plant, Marini Top Tower 2500 – which has a high production capacity of 200 tonnes per hour – Asphaltech engineers were able to meet all deadlines. In just two shifts, two pavers were paved echelon and two transverse joints were constructed.

Asphaltech’s work has dramatically improved the rideability of Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway, and its refreshed surface is ready in time to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Wanneroo facility and 90-year anniversary of the club this year.

Barbagallo Raceway is the first and only track in Australia to have been resurfaced with Asphaltech’s premium special 7mm SMA Race Mix.
