DuraGrip

85% recycled steel slag in place of virgin asphalt aggregates, delivering safer, more skid-resistant roads

DuraGrip is Asphaltech’s premium asphalt product, designed to provide unrivalled safety benefits in an asphalt surface. Offering the same superior strength and durability as Asphaltech’s Stone Mastic Asphalts (SMA) products, DuraGrip is also composed of 85% recycled steel slag aggregate and possesses a high Polished Stone Value (PSV) of 68 that provides high frictional skid resistance, creating safer roads.

Due to its small-sized aggregate particles, DuraGrip can be applied in ultra-thin layers that provide  similar performance results to thicker asphalt layers. It offers superior performance as a general asphalt overlay, when paved as a regulation course prior to asphalt or spray seal, when used at black spot intersections and school crossing areas, and in highly built up residential zones.

High skid resistance and safety

A significant portion of traffic accidents are caused by skidding vehicles on wet pavement surfaces. DuraGrip has been engineered to provide incredible safety benefits, boasting a high PSV of 68, compared to a typical PSV of 46-56 found in dense grade mixes. This elevated PSV provides greater skid-resistance and decreases the overall braking distance of a vehicle, reducing the volume and severity of road accidents.

Longer Pavement Life

DuraGrip’s impressive PSV and steel slag aggregate composition provides very high resilience to the abrasive and polishing action of tyres on aggregates, which shortens pavement life over time. DuraGrip is also incredibly flexible thanks to its mastic properties, making it highly effective at mitigating reflective cracking and further increasing its longevity and cost-effectiveness.

Superior Strength

The stone-on-stone skeletal  structure of DuraGrip’s Stone Mastic creates superior rut resistance and increased pavement strength, along with excellent water resistance and permeability properties.

Environmentally Conscious

DuraGrip takes Asphaltech’s environmentally-conscious product innovation to a new level, reusing by-products of the steel production process to produce asphalt comprising of  85% recycled steel slag aggregate (a by-product that is removed from pure molten steel, cooled and then crushed and screened in the same way as conventional aggregates). DuraGrip also reduces noise pollution thanks to its fine, smooth surface that makes for a quieter driving experience, while dramatically reducing skidding.

For an asphalt mix that offers even greater flexibility and durability, Asphaltech also produces DuraGrip Plus, a specialty product that includes crumbed rubber combined with extra bitumen. The rubber is 100% sourced from second-hand Australian tyres, reducing local tyre stock piles.
